Photography Storytelling

Recently I had the opportunity do a fashion photo shoot North of Columbia, Tennessee at Haynes Haven in Spring Hill, TN.

The fashion shoot team at Haynes Haven Spring Hill, TN work well together.

Fashion Shoot Team:

  • Zintrise Lawson - Designer
  • Federica Cruther  - Makeup
  • Latisha Marthel - Booking Manger and Assisted on the shoot
  • Hannah Gastiger - Model
  • Daniel Adkins - Model
  • Kenneth Purdom - Photography
Thank you to the GM team for all your help.

Haynes Haven, the house was home to Colonel Jack Haynes in the late 1930s through the mid-1940s. It stands on the site of an older home called Woodlawn built just after the Civil War but burned in 1937.

The Haynes Haven Stock Farms, was renowned in the horse world for his prize-winning Tennessee Walking Horses, including 1940 and 1941 Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse of the World, Haynes Peacock.

Part of creating a great photo is telling a story with the photograph. I think with having a backdrop as amazing as the Haynes Haven home environment it helps you create a storyline element. Having a team on the fashion photo shoot that works well together helped create the photographic moments quickly.

Everyone had ideas and concepts that contributed to the photographs. Dreaming up photography shots that tell a story can be an amazing process but making it happen on the set quickly takes some teamwork and planning. Almost anyone can take a photograph given the right tools. But that does not mean that the photograph will tell a compelling story that sells.

In fashion photography we an opportunity to try out different techniques and be creative while working with the designer, model's and stylists. Fashion photography requires attention to detail and teamwork mixed with some originality and technical expertise. From a creative point of view, it’s very cool.

Looking for the unusual poses and interesting lighting elements can enhance your fashion photography. By using a wide variety of lighting angles, you can accent the clothing in a complementary creative way.

The two models we had for this fashion shoot were amazing. Their names are Hannah Gastiger and Daniel Adkins they both made the project very enjoyable and easy to work with. The models were chosen by Zintrise Lawson the designer. Latisha Marthel was our makeup artist for the photo shoot she was very helpful and captured the spirit of the photo shoot with her amazing makeup work.

Special thanks to
Hannah Gastiger (Model) for adding some special touches with her modeling. While working in front of the piano and working with a full-length antebellum style mirror she was able to add a signature piano note that was a throwback to Marilyn Monroe photography.

Also would like to recognize Zintrise Lawson the designer for quickly developing a shoot plan for the fashion shoot. Upon arrival, of the location she quickly scouted the location and organized the models. We were able to go through the venue methodically shooting the fashion models with their amazing wardrobe in a very systematic organized way. This allowed us to be creative and timely with the photo shoot.

I would also like to recognize Greg Spears for being a great chaperone. He was very helpful and went beyond the call of duty. Helping us move here and navigate through the mansion. He was even able to provide a few cell phone photography shots of the fashion shoot, which I am very appreciative of I usually do not get those types of photos and they are nice to have. On behalf of the entire fashion photo shoot team, we say thank you to Greg Spears.

Doing a fashion shoot in a historical location like the Haynes Haven home was an incredible experience. I hope that we are able to do a photo shoot soon in the location again. We are very honored and thankful for the General Motors leadership team that allowed us the opportunity to shoot in an amazing location - Kristy Bergstrom and Mike Rayburn.

Favorite Room

My favorite room was the grand ballroom. It was just left of the entrance and featured hardwood floors running the full length  of the house from back to the front. At the front of the room was a full link antebellum mirror with a soft white baby grand piano in front of the mirror at the other end of the room was a classic 18th-century sitting area with a fireplace to one side. The room was not over furnished which allowed for lots of possibilities for a photo shoot. The high ceilings and small windows have both in of the room made it the ideal location for high fashion photography. I can only hope to have other opportunities to shoot and such a beautiful location in the near future.

From this experience I believe I have learned some very valuable photographic knowledge.
